Attack on Christian Area Kills 11; Muslims Blamed
A Muslim mob attacked and razed a Christian area in the Indonesian city of Ambon today, killing at least 11 people, a witness said, in a fresh blow to hopes of peace in the troubled Moluccas region.
“The attack broke out early [today] in Soya village of Ambon city. They attacked the village by using homemade bombs and set fire to some of the houses,” said a local journalist who had been to the scene, adding that the attackers were Muslim. He said he counted 11 bodies of victims.
Ambon, about 1,500 miles east of Jakarta, is the provincial capital of the Molucca islands, which have been racked by religious fighting.
