From Times Staff Reports

A judge declared a mistrial Wednesday after jurors said they were deadlocked on whether to recommend the death penalty for a 29-year-old gang member convicted of killing a UC Irvine student in 1994.

Jurors deliberated about three days before telling Orange County Superior Court Judge William Froeberg that they were unable to reach a unanimous decision on whether Huan Van Nguyen should die or face life in prison without parole for killing Robert Sapinoso.
