Mainstream to Play Role in IMAX Profit Picture
New theaters and a space documentary were credited with Imax Corp.’s second-quarter profit, but the company said the star in its upcoming fiscal year may be technology that brings mainstream movies to its giant screens.
The company, which has gone through extensive restructuring in the last year, hopes its digital re-mastering, or DMR, technology, will usher new audiences into Imax theaters.
In its second quarter ended June 30, Imax posted net earnings of 9 cents a share, reversing a net loss of 37 cents a share in the year-earlier period. Imax shares gained 26 cents, or more than 10%, to $3.86 on Nasdaq.
