Our Lady of the Angels fraught with angst and drama and ... owls? (“Sacred Creations,” by Suzanne Muchnic, Aug. 4).

I was delighted to see the article discussing the art and sculpture for the new cathedral, and the difficulties and challenges of creating the pieces. I read the closing line from Robert Graham: “I’m very proud of it,” he says. “But it doesn’t have much to do with me anymore. I’m happy to start letting it go.”

I then paged back to look at the photo of his doors. Examining it carefully, I chuckled when I looked at the top right corner of the entrance and there I noticed an addition, perhaps a liturgical commentary. I understand how he feels.

Did anyone else notice how the architecture and art chosen for the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels downtown resembles the aesthetic of Clive Barker “Hellraiser” horror films? At first glance, I thought that’s what the article was about--a new movie in the series. The doors of the south ambulatory look like that sinister cube from the films.

Then I looked closer, at the doors, the tapestries, the altar base, the bishop’s chair and that hideous crucifix, and came to the conclusion that most Catholics must be absolutely appalled by these horrific creations.

And at what cost? How many millions were spent for these ‘80s postmodern deconstructivist leftovers, which seem more suitable to a “Hellraiser” film than a place of worship?
