Teen Arrested, Suspected of Causing Brush Fire
A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of causing a 500-acre brush fire last weekend, authorities said.
The boy, whose name was withheld, was arrested after investigators gathered evidence and witness information, the Riverside unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a press release.
The so-called Bryant Fire started Sunday and destroyed private property and threatened homes in the Calimesa, Cherry Valley and Yucaipa areas. It was contained after four days by 1,300 firefighters at a cost of more than $1.5 million. The boy’s parents could be held liable for the firefighting costs, the Forestry Department said.
