Amtrak’s Express Trains May Resume Next Week

From Staff and Wire Reports

Amtrak used borrowed equipment to keep its trains running and is hoping its premier Acela Express service will gradually resume operations next week.

All 18 of the high-speed trains remained out of service as Amtrak, federal railroad officials and representatives of the manufacturer finished a temporary repair plan for cracks underneath many of the locomotives.

Amtrak leased some locomotives and coach cars from commuter agencies in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.

If the repair plan works, Amtrak President David Gunn said, “it’s a matter of days” before at least some of the high-speed trains return to duty in the Northeast.
