Moving closer to creation of a north-south busway in the San Fernando Valley, a team of Metropolitan Transportation Authority staff and consultants has narrowed a list of 13 possible routes down to five, officials said Wednesday.

The five potential routes are Reseda, Sepulveda, Van Nuys and Lankershim boulevards, and an old rail corridor that parallels Canoga Avenue.

They were identified after a series of community meetings for a transit corridor study. The MTA team is expected to recommend a top choice to the agency’s board early next year.

The route is intended to connect riders in the north Valley to the east-west busway -- projected to open in 2005 -- as well as to the popular Metro Rapid bus service along Ventura Boulevard.

The MTA is holding three public meetings next week to gather community input: Tuesday at Sherman Oaks Women’s Club, 4808 Kester Ave.; Wednesday at Pierce College Campus Center, 6201 Winnetka Ave. in Woodland Hills; and Dec. 12 at Recreation Park, 208 Park Ave., in San Fernando. The meetings all start at 5 p.m.
