Brown Out for Colorado

Colorado running back Chris Brown, who suffered a bruised sternum in a Nov. 16 game against Iowa State, will not play Saturday in the Big 12 championship game against No. 8 Oklahoma at Houston.

Running back Bobby Purify, who has a sprained ankle, is doubtful, Coach Gary Barnett said Wednesday.

Brian Calhoun and Marcus Houston will share duties at running back.

Texas A&M; President Robert Gates wouldn’t confirm reports that school officials received permission to speak with Alabama’s Dennis Franchione about becoming the Aggie coach, although Alabama Athletic Director Mal Moore said that A&M; officials asked for and received permission to talk with Franchione.... Hawaii linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa will give up his final year of eligibility and make himself available for the NFL draft. Tinoisamoa is a senior but has the opportunity to regain a year of eligibility with Hawaii if he graduates by August 2003. He was admitted as a partial qualifier in 1999, which prohibited him from playing that year.... Junior receiver Antoine Harden was dismissed from the Memphis team because of his involvement in a brawl after Texas Christian’s 27-20 victory Saturday.... Prairie View Coach Larry Dorsey has resigned after a 1-10 season. Dorsey was 5-27 in three seasons.... The cause of death of Texas A&M; player Brandon Fails is being disputed by Brazos County Justice of the Peace Patrick Meece, who must sign the death certificate. Meece plans to list the cause as natural. According to preliminary autopsy results, Fails died from a blood clot that moved into his lungs from his surgically repaired right knee.
