Franchione Is Taking Over at Texas A

Dennis Franchione ended his two-year run as Alabama coach Thursday to take over the program at Texas A&M.;

Franchione, 51, replaces R.C. Slocum, who was fired Monday after the Aggies’ 6-6 regular season.

Franchione landed in a private jet at College Station, Texas, Thursday afternoon and was whisked to a waiting car for the ride to the campus.

“I’ll talk to all of you tomorrow,” he said to reporters.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Franchione -- 25-11 at Texas Christian from 1998-2000 and 17-8 in two years at Alabama -- will get a five-year contract worth between $10-$11 million.

Texas A&M; board of regents chairman Erle Nye said, “We think he’s special.”
