Olson Won’t Get a Quick Hook

The plan hasn’t changed. Drew Olson will start at quarterback for the Bruins. Reserve Matt Moore is expected to play.

The deployment, however, could be vastly different.

Should Olson direct an 89-yard touchdown drive -- as he did against USC -- he will take the field the next time UCLA gets the ball, which didn’t happen against the Trojans.

Coach Bob Toledo stuck with a pregame plan and in the second quarter inserted Moore, who fumbled two consecutive snaps deep in Bruin territory. UCLA never recovered, losing, 52-21.

Toledo admitted the move was a mistake he won’t repeat.

“We’ll start Olson and see how the game goes,” he said. “We’d like to play them both if we could.”

Since senior Cory Paus broke an ankle against California, Moore went the whole way in a victory over Stanford and Olson started in victories over Washington and Arizona. Moore came off the bench against Arizona and played well.

“We think they’re both very good young quarterbacks,” Toledo said. “I think they’re pretty equal. They’ve both matured tremendously.”

Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser (high ankle sprain) practiced this week but limped in a special molded boot.

Coach Mike Price said a decision on Gesser’s status won’t be announced until game time. If Gesser does play, he’ll wear two braces on his injured leg.
