Notre Dame Adds Texas to Its List

Unranked Notre Dame won its third straight game over a ranked team, upsetting No. 2 Texas, 98-92, Sunday in the championship game of the BB&T; Classic at the MCI Center in Washington.

In a matchup of two of the nation’s best point guards, Notre Dame’s Chris Thomas got the better of Texas’ T.J. Ford down the stretch.

Thomas finished with 19 points and eight assists and made two free throws with 25 seconds left to give Notre Dame (8-1) a 96-92 lead.

The Longhorns (5-1) erased a 13-point second-half deficit and led by five with three minutes left, but Thomas’ three-point basket with 2:06 left gave the Fighting Irish an 85-83 lead they never relinquished.

No. 8 Florida 68, South Florida 52 -- The Gators improved their winning streak against nonconference opponents at home to 33. Over the last three seasons, Florida (6-2) is 24-1 in December games. The Bulls (4-1) were looking to open the season with five straight wins for the fourth time in school history.

No. 9 Maryland 93, George Washington 82 -- The Terrapins played some long ball to beat the Colonials in the third-place game of the BB&T; Classic at Washington.

Maryland (4-2), which made only four of 17 three-point attempts in an upset loss to Notre Dame on Saturday, was 12 of 17 against the Colonials (3-3).

Steve Blake had career-highs of 27 points and five three-pointers and Drew Nicholas added 27 points to lead the defending national champions.

Nebraska 80, No. 20 Minnesota 60 -- Andrew Drevo, a transfer from Division II Morningside College, scored 10 points as the Cornhuskers (3-3) took a 16-0 lead and never looked back at Lincoln, Neb. Drevo finished with 27 points.

The Gophers (4-1) missed their first five shots and committed five turnovers before Scott Bauer scored 5:59 into the game to end the drought.

No. 21 Michigan State 79, Cleveland State 47 -- The Spartans held the Vikings without a basket for the final 7:30 of the first half during an 18-1 run as they took a 37-14 lead at East Lansing, Mich.

Cleveland State (4-4) ended the drought of nearly nine minutes early in the second half and outscored Michigan State, 10-4, to pull within 17 points. But the Spartans (4-2) responded with a 12-1 run to take a 53-25 lead to regain control.
