Red Wings Beat Blues in Overtime
Henrik Zetterberg’s goal 1:59 into overtime gave the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday night in a matchup of the Central Division’s two top teams at Detroit.
Zetterberg one-timed a pass from Jason Woolley past St. Louis goaltender Fred Brathwaite from the bottom of the right circle.
“I was pretty sure he was going to pass it to me,” Zetterberg said. “It was a lucky shot. I think it went through the five hole.”
Brathwaite thought he should have stopped the shot.
“At the end of the game, I have to make that save,” he said.
The Blues’ Cory Stillman took an elbowing penalty with only four seconds remaining in regulation time and Zetterberg scored right after the penalty expired.
Peter Cajanek’s goal with 2:12 left in the third period tied the score at 3-3 for the Blues, who were without Keith Tkackuk and Pavol Demitra, and sent it into overtime. He tipped in a shot from the point by Barret Jackman 40 seconds after the Red Wings had taken the lead.
Chris Chelios’ goal with 2:52 left gave Detroit a 3-2 lead. His slap shot from the left point deflected in off the stick of the Blues’ Steve Dubinsky.
Scott Mellanby’s power-play goal 4:56 into the third period tied it at 2-2. His slap shot from the high slot beat Curtis Joseph low to the glove side with Mathieu Dandenault off for tripping.
Detroit scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Brett Hull tied the score at 1-1 with a power-play goal 1:44 into the second period. He put in a rebound only seconds after he had hit the goal post with a slap shot.
Edmonton 3, Atlanta 0 -- Tommy Salo stopped 15 shots at Atlanta for his third shutout in 10 games as the Oilers continued to play solid defense.
Jiri Dopita, Ethan Moreau and Anson Carter scored for the Oilers, who improved to 10-2-1 in their last 13 games. They’ve allowed only 18 goals in that span, and have limited opponents to two or fewer goals in 10 of the 13.
Atlanta, which had scored 27 goals in its previous six games, is .500 (7-7-0-2) in its last 16 games.
Boston 4, New York Rangers 1 -- Bryan Berard and Joe Thornton scored goals late in the second period, leading the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins at Madison Square Garden.
Ivan Huml and Marty McInnis added third-period goals for the Bruins, who won for the seventh time in eight games. John Grahame made 23 saves to improve to 9-2-1.
Chicago 3, Tampa Bay 1 -- Theo Fleury scored a tiebreaking goal with 4:57 left in the third period to help the Blackhawks win at Chicago.
Fleury, playing only his second game this season, scored when his shot from right wing struck the post and angled in over the goal line behind goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin.
