Career Ends for 49ers’ Souza

The NCAA denied an appeal to grant injury-plagued Long Beach State forward Tadeu Souza a fifth year of eligibility, ending his college career.

Souza, a senior, has played only eight games in three seasons. He sat out all of the 2000-01 season because of a knee injury and re-injured the right knee after playing in the first eight games last season.

Illinois gave Coach Bill Self a three-year contract extension. Self, 39, is now under contract through the 2007-08 season and will be paid a base salary of $900,000 a year. He will receive a $550,000 bonus if he stays for the duration of the deal.... Arizona forward Luke Walton’s sprained right ankle could keep him out of Sunday’s game against Texas.... Nevada reserve center Jair Veldhuis has been dismissed from the team.... Florida State guard Andrew Wilson will miss at least six weeks after tearing a ligament in his right wrist.
