Five candidates will run in the Jan. 28 special election to fill a vacant seat on the Orange County Board of Supervisors, according to papers filed Monday.

The seat, for the 3rd District, represents Brea, Irvine, Orange, Tustin, Villa Park, Yorba Linda and portions of Anaheim. Candidates had until Monday at 5 p.m. to file paperwork with elections officials and pay a $1,074 fee.

The candidates are Douglas Boeckler of Orange, a veterans representative; former Assemblyman Bill Campbell; reserve deputy Robert L. Douglas of Orange; former Tustin Councilman Jim Potts; and William Wetzel, an assistant professor from Orange.

Orange Councilman Mike Alvarez announced last week that he wouldn’t seek the seat, citing the quick election and a lawsuit challenging its validity.

The election was made possible by a March ballot measure that gave voters, rather than the governor, the power to fill vacant seats on the board. But that measure is being challenged in court.
