Is Dorrell Best Choice or Simply Cheapest?

Share

Karl Dorrell could not be a better choice as the next head coach at UCLA. He brings intangibles that Bob Toledo never had. He understands what UCLA is all about and can sell it to recruits. I recently sent my ticket to the Washington State game back to Mr. Guerrero and urged others to do the same. When can I order my season tickets for 2003?

I’m sure Karl Dorrell is a great guy and all that, but let him cut his teeth at, say, East Carolina or San Diego State. UCLA should reconsider this ill-thought-out plan, and hire a coach who has already proven himself at the Division I-A level, not one who will require years of on-the-job training. I predict Bob Toledo will be remembered fondly by this time next year.

It’s very exciting to get a coach who will bring us back to the great days of Terry Donahue. I am sure Mr. Guerrero is looking forward to increasing winning percentage from the .605 of Bob Toledo to the .665 of Donahue.

Oh, the good old days of the Rose Bowl filled to the UCLA capacity of 35,000 fans, all leaving early, are coming back. I bet every major school in the country is trembling from the fear of having to play UCLA.

The tradition of mediocrity continues.

For 20 years, I’ve believed reports that Peter Dalis and now Dan Guerrero hired coaches for the UCLA athletic programs. Now I know the truth. The appointment of yet another inexperienced, inexpensive, unqualified head coach, the unwillingness to spend money for quality, and the acceptance of mediocrity by the department make it obvious. The man calling the shots in Westwood is ... Donald Sterling.

And so in the end, the Bruins will be coached by a Bruin. Thank you, Chancellor Carnesale, Pete Blackman and Dan Guerrero for the early Christmas present.
