Blues Take Their Shots, but Only Manage a Tie

Martin Rucinsky scored St. Louis’ third power-play goal early in the third period, and the visiting Blues skated to a 3-3 tie Friday night against the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Coyotes had a goal disallowed with 2:06 left in overtime, but hung on behind Brian Boucher’s 39 saves to improve to 3-1-2 in their last six games.

St. Louis outshot Phoenix, 42-18, with each team taking three shots in overtime.

Keith Tkachuk had two goals for the Blues, and Ladislav Nagy, one of the players Phoenix obtained by trading Tkachuk nearly two years ago, had two goals for the Coyotes. Ramzi Abid scored the other, giving Phoenix to a 3-1 lead with 4:18 left in the second period.

Petr Cajanek had two assists for the Blues, who went 0-2-1 on a western road trip.

The Coyotes appeared to have won when Teppo Numminen jammed a rebound of Tony Amonte’s shot inside the left goalpost in the extra period. But Amonte crashed into Johnson, with Tkachuk on his back, and officials waved off the goal.

Carolina 3, Atlanta 2 -- Aaron Ward scored with 1:08 left in overtime as the Hurricanes rallied for a victory over the Thrashers at Atlanta.

Ron Francis scored with 6:14 left in regulation and then set up Jeff O’Neill for the tying goal with 53 seconds left.

Carolina improved to 14-0-3 all time against Atlanta.

Chicago 3, Columbus 1 -- Steve Sullivan scored twice, and Jocelyn Thibault stopped 28 shots to lead the Blackhawks at Chicago.

Sullivan, who had his second two-goal game this season, beat Columbus’ Marc Denis twice in a 3:01 span of the second period.

Florida 3, Buffalo 0 -- Panther goaltender Roberto Luongo made 30 saves for his 12th career shutout in a victory at Buffalo, N.Y.

Ryan Johnson, Viktor Kozlov and former King Jaroslav Bednar scored for Florida. Luongo has made at least 30 saves in a game 12 times.

The Dallas Stars put center Mike Modano on injured reserve after he showed signs of post-concussion syndrome. The team made the move, retroactive to Wednesday, as a precaution after Modano was hit by Philadelphia’s Jeremy Roenick on Tuesday night. Modano missed Thursday’s game at Detroit and won’t play today in New Jersey or Sunday in Carolina.... Boston Bruin forward Sergei Samsonov is expected to miss up to three months after he undergoes surgery on a broken right wrist Tuesday.... Calgary forward Scott Nichol was suspended for five games for hitting Columbus’ Hannes Hyvonen in the mouth with his stick.
