Roenick Returns, Flyers Tie Ottawa

Jeremy Roenick and the Philadelphia Flyers fought their way back twice to claim a hard-earned point.

Simon Gagne scored early in the third period, and the visiting Flyers salvaged a 2-2 tie Monday night with the surging Ottawa Senators in the second game of a home-and-home series.

Ottawa, which won, 3-1, Saturday night in Philadelphia, is undefeated (3-0-1) in its last four games and 15-2-4 since a 7-1 loss Nov. 9 in Boston.

The Flyers, 4-1-1 in their last six games, tied it on Gagne’s sixth goal. Roenick, making his return from a two-game suspension, stole the puck from Daniel Alfredsson at center ice and fed Gagne, who fired a shot over Patrick Lalime’s left shoulder at 5:16.

Todd White and Shaun Van Allen scored for Ottawa. Michal Handzus had the other Philadelphia goal.

Lalime made 28 saves -- including a good one on Gagne with seconds left in overtime.

Washington 3, Tampa Bay 0 -- Olaf Kolzig made 40 saves for his first shutout this season as the Capitals won at Washington to stretch their unbeaten streak to four games.

The Washington streak has coincided with Kolzig’s return after missing four games because of a groin injury. He has given up only six goals in four games since his return.

Detroit 1, Columbus 0 -- Curtis Joseph stopped 33 shots and Kris Draper scored on a rebound with 4:27 remaining as the Red Wings won at Columbus, Ohio. The shutout was Joseph’s third this season and the 39th of his career.

New Jersey 2, New York Rangers 2 -- Mike Dunham stopped 40 shots and Richard Lintner scored the tying goal in the third period to help the Rangers earn a point at New York.

Toronto 5, Atlanta 1 -- Alexander Mogilny scored three goals as the Maple Leafs extended their home unbeaten streak to 10 games. Mogilny got two of his goals on breakaways, helping him post his second hat trick this season and the 17th of his career.

Pittsburgh 5, Buffalo 2 -- Mario Lemieux scored one goal and set up three others in the final nine minutes to help the Penguins rally after trailing, 2-1, at Pittsburgh.

Colorado 5, Vancouver 3 -- Rob Blake had two goals and an assist to help the Avalanche win at Denver for its third consecutive victory under new Coach Tony Granato.

Boston 5, San Jose 2 -- John Grahame made 25 saves and Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist to help the Bruins snap a six-game winless streak with a victory at Boston. The Bruins started 19-4-3-1, but their last win came against the New York Rangers on Dec. 8.

Nashville 3, Florida 2 -- David Legwand scored a power-play goal 42 seconds into overtime to help the Predators win at Sunrise, Fla., only their fourth road victory.

Calgary 3, Minnesota 2 -- Blake Sloan and Craig Berube scored 49 seconds apart in the second period to break a 1-1 tie for the Flames at St. Paul, Minn.

New York Islanders 3, Montreal 1 -- Dave Scatchard’s goal with 5:36 left broke a 1-1 tie and the Islanders added an empty-net goal to in their victory at Uniondale, N.Y.
