Humorous Lady Tries Again

Share

To the surprise of no one, Humorous Lady’s winning streak ended at four Oct. 26 at Arlington Park.

The 2-year-old Distorted Humor filly finished 21 1/2 lengths behind winner Storm Flag Flying after setting the pace in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. What was stunning to some was that she didn’t finish last. Humorous Lady beat two fillies home in the field of 10, one of them the $1.9-million purchase Atlantic Ocean.

Cutting back in distance today, Humorous Lady will probably be favored to start a new streak in the $125,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes at Santa Anita. The race is the fifth leg of a pick six with a carry-over of $195,156.

Now trained by Mike Smith, after having been purchased privately by the Classic Star Stable, the dark bay filly has won four of five around one turn, but the California Breeders’ will mark her first attempt at seven furlongs.

Race of the day: Heat Haze, a half-sister of Grade I winner Banks Hill, will make her U.S. debut for trainer Bobby Frankel in today’s third at Santa Anita. The about 6 1/2-furlong turf race also lured nine other fillies and mares.

Who’s hot: Javier Castellano. The jockey leads the standings at Aqueduct and is winning at about a 30% clip.

Who’s not: Paulino Ortiz. The New York trainer is two for 45 this year.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Severo in the fifth, using Ec Lady, Rich Musique, Shezasummerbreeze and Doc’s Lil’ Angel in the sixth and Global Finance, Humorous Lady, Jaciro and Buttertart in the seventh.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/1. Money: Previous day/meet total: $7.20/$7.20. Total money bet: $18.
