A painter who attacked robbers with a meat cleaver was shot to death in a Los Angeles restaurant, and one of the robbers was killed by his own accomplice in the struggle, police said Tuesday.

Police said three robbers entered Miltons, a Caribbean restaurant at 2415 Slauson Ave. about 8 a.m. Monday and, at gunpoint, ordered a painter and a cook to get on their knees.

As the robbers ransacked the restaurant, the painter, Carl Scott, 36, of Reseda, grabbed a meat cleaver and struck one of them in the back of the neck, then charged another robber, police Det. Scot Williams said.

As Scott and the second robber struggled over the cleaver, the injured robber fatally shot Scott and wounded his own accomplice, police said.

The third robber, a 17-year-old boy, drove the other robbers to a hospital, police said. The man wounded by the cleaver was in stable condition, but his accomplice, who was 19, died, Williams said.

Police are holding the youth and the wounded man, 19, whose name they had not released.

The cook wasn’t injured, and the restaurant had not opened for business.
