John Barnaby, 92; Longtime Harvard Tennis, Squash Coach

John M. Barnaby, 92, who led his teams to 17 national squash titles as a coach at Harvard, died Wednesday at his home in Lexington, Mass. The cause of death was not announced.

He also served as president of the U.S. Professional Tennis Assn. and wrote a number of books on tennis and squash.

Barnaby became men’s tennis and squash coach at Harvard in 1937 and held the post until 1976, except for a brief spell during World War II.

His teams overall were 745-257-3, with 16 Ivy League titles in addition to the 17 national championships.

Raised in Hackensack, N.J., Barnaby didn’t play squash until he attended Harvard. He graduated with a degree in Romance languages in 1932.
