Record-Setting Heat Bakes Region
Temperatures broke records throughout the Los Angeles area Thursday.
Even in areas that didn’t see record highs, temperatures reached about 10 degrees above normal, according to meteorologist Jeremy Nelson of Weather Cental Inc.
“When you’re talking about 10 degrees off the norm, you’re talking about stuff that doesn’t happen often in any season,” Nelson said.
In downtown Los Angeles, temperatures reached 88 degrees, breaking a Feb. 21 record of 86 set in 1982, according to Weather Central. The longest-standing record fell in Burbank, where highs reached 85, one degree higher than Feb. 21, 1954.
Winds blowing from Utah and Nevada created the high-pressure system that pushed heat into California, Nelson said. The hot spell is expected to continue through the weekend. Other Southland communities setting high-temperature records Thursday included: Santa Ana with 93 degrees (topping a record 87 set in 1995); Long Beach, 89; Torrance, 87, and Chatsworth, 88.
