AIDS activist and author Larry Kramer has been discharged from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, two weeks after the HIV-positive patient underwent a liver transplant.

Kramer, 66, will remain in Pittsburgh for a few more weeks so doctors can monitor his condition until he’s well enough to return home to New York, hospital officials said. The author and playwright suffered from end-stage liver failure caused by hepatitis B and underwent 12 hours of surgery Dec. 21.

He left the hospital Wednesday evening, accompanied by friend and primary caregiver Rodger McFarlane, the former director of Gay Men’s Health Crisis Inc., an AIDS organization Kramer helped found.

Kramer also founded the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, or ACT UP.
