Flames Take Their Shots, but Still Lose

Milan Hnilicka is used to facing a lot of shots. He’s less accustomed to getting much help from his defense.

The Atlanta goaltender had 37 saves and Hnat Domenichelli scored a second-period power-play goal to give the Thrashers a 1-0 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night at Atlanta.

“That’s the kind of game we want to play--everybody working hard and contributing,” Hnilicka said. “That’s what we are aiming for, and it felt great to achieve it the way we did tonight.”

Hnilicka earned his second shutout this season and fourth overall. He has faced at least 30 shots in 25 games and entered with 1,077 shots against this year, seven less than NHL leader Mike Richter of the New York Rangers.

Atlanta, the NHL’s worst team, has a two-game winning streak for only the second time this season, the first since Oct. 26-27 and the first in its three-year history at home after December.

Calgary, which dropped to 3-6-2 in its last 10 games, managed only one shot on goal after goalie Roman Turek was pulled with 1:06 remaining.

Domenichelli scored 7:53 into the second period, redirecting Yannick Tremblay’s slap shot from outside the left circle and beating Turek’s stick side.

Toronto 3, Washington 3--Tomas Kaberle scored his second goal of the game with 14:21 left in the third period as the Maple Leafs earned a tie with the Capitals at Washington.

The Capitals, who have dropped four of five, played without wingers Peter Bondra (illness) and Jaromir Jagr (groin strain). Their status for today’s game in Florida is unknown.

Ottawa 4, Florida 2--Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and an assist and Patrick Lalime made 23 saves as the Senators won at Sunrise, Fla.

Alfredsson’s 22nd goal tied the game at 1-1 in the first period. Ottawa then bolted out to a 4-1 lead in the second period, scoring three goals in a 4:10 span.
