Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom led all players in fan balloting for the NHL All-Star game, receiving 211,486 votes to earn a spot Saturday in the World team’s starting lineup for the Feb. 2 game at Staples Center.

The Swedish star will be joined on the World team by Red Wing center Sergei Fedorov of Russia and goalie Dominik Hasek of the Czech Republic. Detroit Coach Scotty Bowman will direct the team.

Red Wings left wing Brendan Shanahan led voting for the North American squad with 165,184. He will be joined in the starting lineup by fellow winger Owen Nolan of San Jose, goalie Patrick Roy of Colorado, defensemen Rob Blake of Colorado and Chris Pronger of St. Louis, and San Jose center Vincent Damphousse (89,139).

Pat Quinn of Toronto will coach the North American squad.

Lidstrom will play alongside Carolina defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh. The starting World forward line will consist of Fedorov and wingers Teemu Selanne of San Jose and Jaromir Jagr of Washington.

The remaining players will be announced Wednesday.

Kevin Stevens, one of hockey’s most reliable scorers when the Pittsburgh Penguins were winning consecutive Stanley Cups 10 years ago, missed another game Saturday as he pondered retirement.

Stevens, who has only one goal all season, unexpectedly left the Penguins shortly before their Thursday night game in Buffalo and returned to Pittsburgh. He met with General Manager Craig Patrick for about an hour after not practicing Friday, and did not show up for Saturday’s game against St. Louis.

“He sees his career is coming near the end, and he doesn’t like the way it’s ending right now,” Patrick said. “He’s just trying to decide what he should do, whether he should continue playing or forget about it.”

The 36-year-old Stevens has averaged about 10 minutes per game this season, but has often been a healthy scratch in recent weeks.

“He’s down,” Patrick said. “He’s frustrated with the way things are going. He’s going through a tough time, and you don’t like to face the day it might end.”
