Stanford Rebounds to Beat Oregon

Nicole Powell was as surprised as anyone when she learned she broke Stanford’s oldest school record.

Powell had 21 rebounds to go with 23 points as the No. 4 Cardinal defeated Oregon, 91-76, Sunday in a Pacific 10 game at Stanford.

“I thought someone was joking,” the 6-foot-2 sophomore said. “That’s a surprise to me. It’s hard to say if I’ve played better.”

The previous school record of 20 was set by Kathy Murphy on Jan. 6, 1978, against Cal Poly Pomona.

T’Nae Thiel had a career-high 19 to help Stanford, 16-1 overall, 6-0 in the Pac-10. Edniesha Curry and Shaquala Williams each scored 19 points for the Ducks (10-7, 5-3).

No. 8 Vanderbilt 62, Mississippi 42--The Commodores (16-3, 2-1 SEC), trailing by five points seven minutes into the game at Nashville, outscored the Rebels (9-7, 1-2) by a 20-2 margin the rest of the half.

No. 9 South Carolina 91, Arkansas 66--Jocelyn Penn tied her career high with 32 points at Columbia, S.C., to lead the Gamecocks (16-1, 4-0 SEC). The Razorbacks are 9-6 and 0-3.

No. 16 Texas 87, No. 10 Texas Tech 83--Heather Schreiber scored 28 points at Austin, Texas, to help the Longhorns (12-2, 4-0 Big 12) beat the Lady Raiders (9-5,1-3).

No. 11 Louisiana Tech 67, Hawaii 55--Cheryl Ford had 24 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Lady Techsters (11-3, 6-0 WAC) at Honolulu. The Rainbows are 10-3 and 3-1.

No. 13 Purdue 80, Ohio State 43--The Boilermakers (13-3, 4-2 Big Ten) used a 25-7 run late in the first half at West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes are 9-8 and 4-2.

Mississippi State 84, No. 15 Georgia 82--LaToya Thomas scored 43 points to lead the Bulldogs (12-5, 3-1 SEC) at Starkville, Miss. Christi Thomas led Georgia (12-3, 1-2) with 25 points.

No. 17 North Carolina 89, Clemson 85--Nikki Teasley made two free throws with 2.2 seconds left at Clemson, S.C. , for the Tar Heels (14-3, 4-1 ACC).

No. 18 Florida 83, Alabama 77--Brandi McCain had 21 points and made five free throws down the stretch for the Gators (12-5, 2-2 SEC) at Gainesville, Fla.

No. 19 Auburn 70, Kentucky 66--The Tigers (13-3) held off the Wildcats at Lexington, Ky., to win their first SEC game after two losses.

St. Louis 57, No. 20 Tulane 56--Angie Lewis made a free throw with 2:01 left to give the Billikens (9-7, 2-1 Conference USA) the victory at St. Louis. The Green Wave is 9-7 and 2-1.

Penn State 78, No. 22 Michigan 65--Kelly Mazzante scored 22 points at State College, Pa., to help the Nittany Lions (11-7, 3-2 Big Ten). The Wolverines are 11-6, 1-5.

No. 25 Old Dominion 71, George Mason 51--Lucienne Berthieu had 19 points at Fairfax, Va., to lead the Lady Monarchs (9-5, 6-0 Colonial Athletic Assn.).
