Knight Moves Work in Lubbock

Oklahoma State Coach Eddie Sutton saw something familiar in Bob Knight’s Texas Tech team.

Andre Emmett scored a career-high 32 points as the Red Raiders got their biggest victory under Knight, 94-70, over the sixth-ranked Cowboys Saturday at Lubbock, Texas.

“[Tech’s] motion offense is as good as I’ve seen one of Bob’s teams play,” said Sutton. “I really applaud him for being able to pull these players together.”

It was the first time Knight and Sutton had coached against each other in 13 seasons. The two faced off four times in the mid-1980s when Knight was at Indiana and Sutton was at Kentucky. Knight has a 3-2 advantage.

Texas Tech (14-3, 3-2 in the Big 12) had lost its previous two games but shot a season-high 62%, with Emmett making 14 of 18 attempts.

“I mean, this has not been a miracle,” said Knight of Texas Tech’s turnaround from last season’s 9-19 record. “Nobody’s walked across the Brazos and waved a wand at us.”

Texas Tech also ended a losing streak at nine against Oklahoma State (15-3, 2-3).

No. 1 Duke 103, No. 14 Wake Forest 80--Jason Williams had 23 points at Durham, N.C., as one of five double-figure scorers for the Blue Devils, who went over 100 points for the fifth time this season. Duke scored 99 in Thursday’s victory over No. 3 Maryland.

Wake Forest (13-5, 3-2) shot 56% in the first half, but still trailed, 61-49.

No. 20 Georgia 84, No. 2 Florida 79--Jarvis Hayes scored 23 points and twin brother Jonas had 13 at Gainesville, Fla., as the Bulldogs (15-3, 4-1 in the Southeastern Conference) ended the Gators’ school-record winning streak at 14. Georgia made its final seven shots to finish at 55%. Florida (15-2, 4-1) shot 40%.

No. 4 Kansas 74, No. 5 Oklahoma 67--At Lawrence, Kan., Drew Gooden scored 13 of his 19 points in a 30-8 run to start the second half that helped the Jayhawks (15-2. 4-0 in the Big 12) end a winning streak at 13 for the Sooners (14-2, 3-1).

Ebi Ere scored 13 of his 17 points in a 17-5 run that helped Oklahoma pull within 68-62 with three minutes left, but that was as close as it got.

No. 7 Cincinnati 77, Louisville 50--Steve Logan scored nine of his 21 points in a 17-0 run midway in the first half at Cincinnati that allowed the Bearcats (17-1, 5-0 in Conference USA) to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 17.

Louisville (11-5, 2-3) missed 24 of its first 28 shots.

Tennessee 66, No. 8 Syracuse 62--At Knoxville, Tenn., senior Jenis Grindstaff scored a career-high 18 points, including two free throws in the final seconds, as the Volunteers (7-9) ended a winning streak at seven for the Orangemen (16-3).

No. 12 Kentucky 72, Notre Dame 65--Keith Bogans scored 23 points at South Bend, Ind., to lead the Wildcats (12-4) to their eighth win in a row over the Irish (12-5).

No. 16 Alabama 85, Mississippi State 73--Erwin Dudley scored 24 points and Rod Grizzard had 22 as the Crimson Tide (16-3, 4-1 in the SEC) beat the Bulldogs (15-4, 2-3) at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Northwestern 63, No. 17 Iowa 50--Winston Blake scored 16 points at Evanston, Ill., as the Wildcats (10-6, 2-3 in the Big Ten) beat a ranked opponent for the first time in almost three years. It was the fewest points scored by Iowa (13-7, 2-4) this season.

No. 21 Missouri 92, Colorado 77--Kareem Rush matched his season best with 29 points at Columbia, Mo., as the Tigers (14-4, 4-1 in the Big 12) won their sixth in a row over the Buffaloes (10-5, 1-3).

No. 24 Miami 102, Providence 96--Darius Rice scored 32 points, including a basket near the end of regulation, as the Hurricanes (17-2, 4-2 in the Big East) surpassed their win total from last season with the overtime victory at Miami. Rice made 13 of 17 shots, including six of eight from three-point range

Providence (10-9, 1-4) got 31 points from Ryan Gomes.

Ohio State 73, No. 25 Indiana 67--Brian Brown had 26 points at Columbus, Ohio, including four free throws in the final 24.2 seconds, as the Buckeyes (14-2, 5-0) took over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten.

Jared Jefferies had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Indiana (11-6, 4-1).
