Fullerton Gets Unlikely Victory Against Utah State
Forward Pape Sow scored a game-high 20 points before fouling out and guard Kevin Richardson had 11, all in the second half, as Cal State Fullerton ended a seven-game losing streak with a 65-51 victory at home against Utah State.
Richardson had all of his 11 points, and Sow had 10 during a deciding 10-minute span when Fullerton took command with a 29-15 run that earned the Titans their first Big West Conference victory in almost a year.
Utah State (13-4, 5-3), which had defeated Fullerton four consecutive times and won 14 of the last 15, fell to the Titans for the first time since Feb. 4, 1998. Fullerton (4-12, 1-6), won for the first time since defeating Sacramento State in mid-December, and earned its first conference victory since defeating UC Riverside last February.
“Their [Utah State’s] intensity hadn’t been what I had seen in the first half, and they couldn’t get it back,” said Titan Coach Donny Daniels. “But our guys had played extremely well. We got some breaks, made our foul shots down the stretch, and protected the ball.”
Utah State’s Desmond Penigar, a junior from Upland, finished with a team-high 17 points and nine rebounds.
