Seven Is Magic Number

Nearly nine years ago, trainer Richard Mandella had a memorable Breeders’ Cup Day.

Not only did the Hall of Famer win Breeders’ Cup races with Phone Chatter and Kotashaan, he won two other stakes on the undercard at Santa Anita.

If all goes well today, Bobby Frankel could win seven stakes around the country.

Besides having likely favorites Megahertz and Surya in the $500,000 American Oaks and $100,000 Royal Heroine, respectively, at Hollywood Park, Frankel also has Blu Air Force in the $300,000 Triple Bend Breeders’ Cup Handicap in Inglewood, Lido Palace in the $500,000 Suburban Handicap and Drippingindiamonds in the $200,000 Prioress at Belmont Park, Denon in the $500,000 United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park and defending champion Euchre in the $400,000 Cornhusker Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Prairie Meadows.

A sweep of those races wouldn’t be a shock because all of the horses are no worse than strong contenders. Blu Air Force will be trying to upset Kona Gold in his first race on the dirt. Lido Palace will almost certainly will be second choice to Macho Uno in the Suburban, and Drippingindiamonds, who will be making her first start for Frankel after a private purchase, is unbeaten in three starts. Denon and Euchre will probably be favored in their respective races in New Jersey and Iowa.

The United Nations and Suburban will make up two-thirds of the National Thoroughbred Racing Assn.’s pick three. Sandwiched between those two stakes is the $200,000 Stars and Stripes Breeders’ Cup Turf Handicap at Arlington Park.

Race of the day: The fifth at Hollywood Park is only a $10,000 claimer, but it has a lot of significance. It is the first race of a pick six that has a guaranteed pool of $1 million and the fourth race in the Churchill Downs simulcast network pick four.

Who’s hot: The 15 original entrants in the American Oaks. The 3-year-old fillies are a combined 41 of 103.

Who’s not: Icy Waquoit. The gray gelding, who will be favored in the 12th at Pleasanton, has lost his last four at 9-5, 6-5, 1-1 and 6-5 odds.

Exotically speaking: Let’s try a $36 pick six: use Valiant Vision, Ancient Traveler and Diamond Machine in the fifth, single Valediction in the sixth, Megahertz and Dublino in the seventh, Blu Air Force, Kona Gold and Mellow Fellow in the eighth, single Surya in the ninth and Wheater in the 10th.

Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 3/135. Money: Previous day/meet total: $15/$771.40. Total money bet: $894.
