Fire in El Dorado Forest Shuts U.S. Highway 50

A 320-acre fire crackling through brush and trees forced authorities to keep a stretch of the main route to South Lake Tahoe closed Saturday.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the blaze in the El Dorado National Forest around 4 p.m. Friday. By Saturday morning, more than 600 firefighters were battling the fire, according to the California Department of Forestry.

U.S. Highway 50 was closed in both directions between Pollock Pines and Meyers as a safety precaution.

The fire was 70% contained Saturday morning.

Investigators had not determined the fire’s cause.
