Warhol Versus Picasso

Being “no Picasso” is quite a compliment (“After the First 15 Minutes,” by Christopher Knight, May 19). The Picasso tradition is a selfish style, accessible to few. Such “explorations of form” are art school preparations for creating true art. It took Warhol to expose that style to scrutiny.

While I disagree with Knight’s contextualizing of Warhol’s work, I firmly believe that art should evoke thought as well as feeling. Warhol’s work still resonates on both of those levels today, while Picasso’s works, especially those based on African art he “discovered” at the Trocadero, lack any sort of artistic maturity.
