Trailing Reine de Romance

Share

Since Reine de Romance arrived in the U.S. more than 1 1/2 years ago, it has become quite clear that the Irish-bred filly does her best work from off the pace.

Trained by Jenine Sahadi for Team Valor, the daughter of Vettori won three times in four races on grass during the spring and summer of 2001, including the San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar.

In each of her good races, Reine de Romance rallied from behind, so, in her first race as a 4-year-old, it was surprising to see her on the lead May 9 at Hollywood Park.

The 2-1 favorite that day, she retreated to fourth behind the streaking Snowflake, who has won four in a row for trainer Ron McAnally since coming to this country, but she could make amends in today’s second, a $58,000 optional claimer at one mile on the turf.

Kent Desormeaux will ride Reine de Romance for the first time and expect him to back off whatever pace develops. The splits should be legitimate with Stormy Society, who will be handled by leading jockey Patrick Valenzuela, in the lineup.

The race, which features only five runners, is not part of a pick six that has a carryover of $102,185.72.

Race of the day: Truly A Judge, claimed for $20,000 on Oct. 8, will try to beat graded stakes winner Futural, who has seen better days, $1.15-million yearling Hadrian’s Wall and two others in today’s seventh at Hollywood Park.

Who’s hot: Bruce Headley. The trainer began the week six for 17 at Hollywood Park.

Who’s not: Leo O’Brien. The veteran trainer, who is based in New York, is two for 45 in 2002.

Exotically speaking: Exacta boxes in the first keying Catch The Queen with Splendid Jaclyn, Biker’s Sis and Steamy Dreams.
