Holdsclaw Helps Mystics Beat Sol

Chamique Holdsclaw had 23 points and a season-high 15 rebounds to help the Washington Mystics defeat the winless Miami Sol, 76-67, Sunday in a WNBA game before 14,156 at Washington.

The Mystics (4-1) are off to the best start in franchise history. Stacy Dales-Schuman scored the final seven of her 14 points from the free-throw line with less than one minute to play.

The Mystics took their first lead of the second half at 60-59 when Helen Luz made a three-point shot with 7:46 left. Washington outscored the Sol (0-5), 19-8, the rest of the game.

Tina Thompson scored 23 points as the Houston Comets beat the Sacramento Monarchs, 75-62, before 10,245 at Houston. Sheryl Swoopes added 20 points as the Comets (4-2) kept Sacramento (0-3) winless.... Crystal Robinson scored 19 points as the New York Liberty (5-2) beat the Detroit Shock, 70-63, before 3,315 at Auburn Hills, Mich. The Shock is 0-6.... South Carolina (53-15) scored five runs in the ninth inning to defeat defending national champion Miami, 6-4, in Game 3 of an NCAA Division I super regional at Columbia, S.C., and advance to the College World Series for the first time since 1985.

Texas (53-15) beat Houston, 5-2, in Game 3 of a series at Austin, Texas, to clinch the Longhorns’ 29th College World Series berth.... Clemson (51-15) hit three solo homers in the final two innings to defeat Arkansas, 7-4, at Clemson, S.C., to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 1989.... Justin Seely went four for five with a grand slam as Nebraska (47-19) clinched its second consecutive berth in the College World Series with an 11-6 victory over Richmond.

Mark Walters of the Navigators racing team, used a final sprint over the last yards to edge Chann McRae of U.S. Postal Service at the finish line and win the USPRO Cycling Championship at Philadelphia. In the women’s Liberty Classic, Petra Rossner of the Saturn racing team won her fifth consecutive title with a sprint past Laura Van Gilder of Trek Plus.
