Jonathan Kaye avoided the late trouble that derailed Phil Mickelson, shooting a five-under-par 65 Saturday to take the third-round lead in the Greater Hartford Open at Cromwell, Conn.

Kaye, suspended for two months and put on probation for the season after a confrontation with a tournament security guard last year, had a 13-under 197 to take a one-stroke lead over Scott Verplank into the final round.

“It’s just another round of golf,” said Kaye, winless in six full seasons on the PGA Tour. “I just need to keep doing what I’ve been doing.”
