Two Streaks on the Line

Share

A couple of streakers will get together in today’s main event at Hollywood Park.

Bonus Pay Day and Alfurune, both of whom have won two in a row, head a field of six in the seventh, a $55,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles and the fifth leg of a pick six that has a $100,430 carryover.

A California-bred gelding, Bonus Pay Day has blossomed since being claimed for $32,000 by trainer Pete Eurton for the partnership of Frank and Sharon Alesia, Mike Mellen’s Bran Jam Stable and Joe Ciaglia.

After finishing fourth in a blanket finish on the Santa Anita turf in his first race for Eurton, Bonus Pay Day won by three lengths as the 2-1 favorite in his first Hollywood Park start May 4. A little more than three weeks later, he was even more dominant, winning by 4 1/2 lengths at 11-10.

The removal of blinkers has obviously made a difference and the son of Bonus Money has trained well since scratching from the Californian earlier in the month. He again will be ridden by apprentice Kevin Krigger.

Owned by Savario Farm and trained by Craig Dollase, Alfurune won two sprints at Hollywood Park in April and May and now has to prove that he can win around two turns. The gelding is winless in five previous races beyond seven furlongs. Both of his recent victories have come with Laffit Pincay, who remains his jockey.

Completing the field are Kela, Brazilian import Nikolayev, Trompolino and Wallahatchie.

Race of the day: The sixth is a contentious sprint for 3-year-olds racing for a $40,000 claiming price. There are few, if any, throwouts in the field of nine.

Who’s hot: Patrick Valenzuela. The jockey won three races Wednesday at Hollywood Park and has a 55-39 lead over Pincay in the standings.

Who’s not: Phil Hauswald. The trainer is three for 51 this year and is 0 for 21 at Belmont Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Distinctive Tale in the second, using Bonusita and Youmakemethorbaby in the third and Bronx, Insane Reality, Special Forces and Pikester in the fourth.
