McCarron a Nice Guy Who Finished First

Share

I was one of the many fans who stayed away from the track on Sunday, knowing that Came Home would win and Chris McCarron would go out a winner. I just didn’t think I could handle the drive home with my glasses fogged from tears. Chris is one of the key reasons that the Southern California jockey colony is as strong as it is. And it is time for all of us to pause and thank this man for his contributions to the sport and for the role model he is for us all.

I recall my last encounter with Chris. I was a fan standing in the tunnel at Santa Anita as he was riding into the post parade. Someone hailed him and asked for his time on a Monday or Tuesday. Knowing those were off-racing days, and that he has a family, I smiled at Chris as he declined the offer and suggested a race day as an alternative. He wins because he’s a winner. That’s what we all Came Home to Sunday.
