Pittsburgh Makes an Impression

Pittsburgh might be the beast of the Big East.

The No. 7 Panthers (26-4) rolled through Boston College, 76-62, in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament Thursday at New York.

The Eagles (20-11) broke to a 20-15 lead with six minutes left in the first half, then the Panthers went on a 21-4 run to take a 36-24 halftime lead.

Boston College never challenged after that.

“In a game when you’re down, you have to do damage in the first six or seven minutes of the second half,” Eagle Coach Al Skinner said. “We didn’t. We didn’t execute well and they got transition baskets and built the lead.”

Pittsburgh never panicked and waited for its opportunity. When it came, the Panthers made their move.

“We don’t get concerned when we’re down,” Pittsburgh Coach Ben Howland said. “We defended and rebounded and did what we wanted to do.”

It’s a formula Pittsburgh has used in winning eight games in a row and 11 of the last 12. The Panthers wore down Boston College and had a 40-23 rebounding edge.

“Our players are strong and physical,” Howland said. “We don’t get pushed around. We have depth. We’re nine or 10 deep and all of them are good.”

The Panthers will play No. 20 Miami (24-6), which defeated Georgetown, 84-76, in overtime. The Hoyas are 19-11. St. John’s (20-11) was eliminated with an 83-63 loss to Notre Dame (21-9). The Fighting Irish will play No. 19 Connecticut (22-6), which defeated Villanova, 72-70. The Wildcats are 17-12.
