Federal aviation officials are investigating whether federal agents violated security rules at the Salt Lake International Airport during the Olympics, an official said Wednesday.

The internal probe was prompted by a complaint from at least one agent stationed in Salt Lake City who said lax security created risks for travelers, said Rebecca Trexler, a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman in Washington.

The alleged lapses included the failure to re-screen passengers when a metal detector was found unplugged Feb. 16; checkpoint screeners allowing other screeners to walk around detectors; and inadequate screenings and searches of passengers.

The agency took over aviation security Feb. 17 as the Olympics were well underway.
