Cubs’ Gordon Is Planning Quick Return

Two weeks after tearing a muscle in his shoulder, Chicago Cub closer Tom Gordon is feeling so good he’s talking about making an early return.

“I’m really optimistic about this. I think everything’s going to go well,” he said Wednesday after returning to the Cubs’ camp at Mesa, Ariz.

“I feel very strong. The muscle in my shoulder is very strong. I don’t have any soreness in my arm. Hopefully that’s a good sign.”

The Atlanta Braves acquired catcher Henry Blanco from the Milwaukee Brewers for catcher Paul Bako and pitcher Jose Cabrera.

Eddie Perez, who was contending with Bako for the No. 2 job behind Javy Lopez, said his career with the Braves is over.

Cincinnati shortstop Barry Larkin was relieved after a medical exam found inflammation but no serious injury to his groin. He is expected to play this weekend.

Tony Gwynn and Jeff Brantley, both of whom retired after last season, were hired by ESPN as analysts.

Gwynn will work his TV schedule around his position as a volunteer assistant to retiring San Diego State Coach Jim Dietz.

Gwynn will replace Dietz after this season.

ESPN and ESPN2 have added national telecasts on Monday nights and Wednesday afternoons to their major league coverage.

Jeff Datz, 42, was hired as bench coach by Cleveland to replace Grady Little, who left to manage Boston.
