Youngsters Get a Look

Santa Anita isn’t the only place offering 2-year-old racing.

The Arcadia track will have its second two-furlong race of the meet for California-bred babies this afternoon after Gulfstream Park has its first contest of the season for 2-year-olds.

The card in Florida will begin with a three-furlong sprint that attracted seven youngsters.

Sweet Promises, a son of End Sweep, probably will get most of the support because his trainer (Larry Pilotti) does well with rookies and with 2-year-olds. Sweet Promises will break from the rail and will be ridden by Edgar Prado.

The local 2-year-old race has a field of 10, including Hollywood Honey, a Distinctive Cat filly who did not draw in from the also-eligible list in Wednesday’s first race.

Trained by Wesley Ward for a partnership, Hollywood Honey has trained as if she can run some and the barn has done well with youngsters. Tyler Baze will ride the filly, who worked in 22 1/5 from the gate March 6 and also had 35 4/5 and 11 flat drills.

A race after the 2-year-olds begin their careers, Sing Because, a 9-year-old, will try for his 14th lifetime victory. A gelded son of Seattle Song, he has won seven of 19 at Santa Anita and is the 3-1 second choice to win for the first time in his third start for trainer Eddie Truman.

Race of the day: Jeremy’s Quest, who has won two in a row impressively, will seek her first win on the turf in today’s seventh at about 61/2 furlongs. The Mr. Integrity filly will be making her first start for trainer Bill Spawr, who claimed her for $20,000 out of her victory Feb. 23.

Who’s hot: Dean Pederson. The trainer has won with 14 of his first 34 starters at Golden Gate Fields.

Who’s not: Ed Plesa Jr. The trainer began the new week at Gulfstream Park having lost with 70 of his 73 starters in 2002.
