all day Ballroom Dance

As the old Sam Cooke song goes, “Everybody wants to Cha Cha Cha,” but what about the tango? The waltz? West Coast swing? Looks like there’s going to be a crowd. And it’ll likely be at the annual Southern California Dancesport Championships this Saturday in Glendale. Ballroom dancing competitions in various age and event categories run throughout the day, followed by social dancing afterward.

10am Movies

Although the insatiability of cable TV has been a boon to documentarians the world over, like most filmmakers they’d prefer an audience see their work projected on a large screen in a dark room. For the 20th year, the International Documentary Assn. affords filmgoers that opportunity during DocuDay, a daylong showcase for the five Oscar-nominated features as well as the three films up for the short documentary award. The eight films represent a true world of cinema; their settings range from the Mississippi Delta to the embattled streets of Jerusalem, and they deal with such topics as war, racism and the uplifting power of music.

DocuDay, Raleigh Studios, Chaplin Theatre, 5300 Melrose Ave. “Lalee’s Kin: The Legacy of Cotton,” 10 a.m. “Murder on a Sunday Morning,” 12 p.m. “War Photographer,” 2:30 p.m. Nominated short films program: “Artists and Orphans: A True Drama,” “Sing!” and “Thoth,” 4:30 p.m. “Promises,” 7:15 p.m. “Children Underground,” 9:30 p.m. Screenings, $5 to $7; all-day pass, $20 to $30. (213) 534-3600.

all day Architecture

With thousands of people moving to Los Angeles County each year and few new housing units being built, a citywide crisis is brewing. See some of the ideas for solutions-- including prototypes for multi-unit urban housing--at the daylong conference Beyond Sprawl: New Strategies and Prototypes for Housing. The morning focuses on city planning issues, including a keynote address by Thom Mayne, principal architect at the firm Morphosis. The afternoon is dedicated to architectural models. The setting might provide some inspiration as well: The Southern California Institute of Architecture, or SCI-Arc, is a remarkable converted train depot east of the downtown Civic Center.

Beyond Sprawl: New Strategies and Prototypes for Housing, the Southern California Institute of Architecture, 970 E. 3rd St., downtown L.A. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free. Limited seating. (213) 613-2200.

8pm Dance

The 10 young members of WOFA! Percussion and Dance From Guinea, West Africa, have mastered such traditional instruments as the kyrin (a wooden drum in the shape of a tree trunk), the square sikko drum and the wassakhoumba (small calabash dishes, strung onto a curved stick, that produce high-pitched sounds when shaken). Praised by The Times in 1998 for its “creatively arranged and staged” pieces in an “intimate, nuanced performance,” the group is directed by Francois Kokelaere, himself a master drummer. And in case you’re curious, wofa! means “let’s go” in the performers’ Soso dialect.
