Gary Roberts scored 4:30 into the third overtime at Toronto, giving the Maple Leafs a 3-2 victory over Ottawa on Saturday night in the third longest game in Maple Leaf history.

Roberts got to a loose puck off a faceoff in the Ottawa zone and fired a wrist shot between goalie Patrick Lalime’s pads to tie the Eastern Conference semifinal series, 1-1.

“It was kind of wide open there for two minutes there, end-to-end rushes, turnovers, it looked like someone just wanted to end it,” Roberts said. “We’re fortunate to get the win.”

Travis Green and Darcy Tucker also scored for the Maple Leafs, while goaltender Curtis Joseph stopped 54 shots.

“We’re lucky Cujo saved us,” Roberts said.

Colorado 8, San Jose 2--Rob Blake scored twice and the Avalanche tied a team record for goals in a playoff game while evening the series, 1-1, at Denver.

Colorado was sluggish in a 6-3 loss in Game 1 with just one day of rest after a physical seven-game series with the Kings.

“We wanted to redeem ourselves,” Avalanche Coach Bob Hartley said. “The players deserve a lot of credit because they prepared themselves.”

It was the most goals by Colorado in the playoffs since they beat Florida, 8-1, in Game 2 of the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals.

Detroit 3, St. Louis 2--Steve Yzerman scored on the first shot of the game and Dominik Hasek made 35 saves at Detroit as the Red Wings took a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals.
