A Navy helicopter based at Coronado crashed and sank in the Pacific Ocean about 87 miles off San Diego during a training exercise, but all three personnel were rescued, officials said Sunday.

The accident occurred as the SH-60 helicopter from North Island Naval Air Station was attempting to land on the guided-missile destroyer Paul Hamilton at 9:38 p.m. Saturday. The Hamilton is part of the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier battle group now training for deployment to the Arabian Sea.

The three crew members were rescued by sailors from the Hamilton. An investigation into the crash is underway, officials said.
