A man wielding a pair of scissors was shot and killed by Los Angeles police on Sunday afternoon in Winnetka, authorities said.

The unidentified man, believed to be in his 20s, allegedly slashed an officer on the ear before two other officers fired several rounds at him shortly after 4 p.m. on the corner of Madora Avenue and Cantlay Street, said LAPD Capt. Jim Cansler.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded officer’s injury was not serious.

The injured officer initially spotted the suspect stealing parts from parked vehicles at Sherman Way and Corbin Avenue, police said.

“He told the officer to leave him alone or he will kill the officer,” Cansler said.

The officer pursued the suspect on foot past a church and into a residential area, where the officer tried to subdue the man with his baton. When more officers arrived, the suspect reportedly lunged at the officer with the scissors.

Cansler said the two officers who fired their weapons were being interviewed, along with witnesses, at the West Valley police station.
