Man Charged in Michigan Shootings

Joshua White was charged with assault with intent to commit murder Wednesday in the shooting of two Michigan football players at Ann Arbor, Mich.

White, 18, was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon and two felony firearms counts.

White did not speak during his arraignment. A not-guilty plea was entered for him by Magistrate A. Thomas Truesdell, who set bond at $100,000.

White turned himself in Tuesday, hours after a warrant was issued.

Sophomore defensive back Markus Curry was shot in the back and junior linebacker Carl Diggs was shot in the leg after a fight at an off-campus party Saturday.

Both players were treated at University of Michigan Hospital and released. Doctors have not yet decided whether to remove a bullet still lodged near Curry’s spine.

White is on probation for breaking and entering, said his attorney, Sharon Clark Woodside.

Georgia’s Matias Boeker began his NCAA men’s singles title defense by beating Yale’s Steve Berke, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round at College Station, Texas.

Second-seeded Peter Handoyo of Tennessee was eliminated, falling, 6-1, 6-2, to Ryan Newport of Texas A&M.;

Third-seeded Harsh Mankad of Minnesota and No. 4 Jesse Witten of Kentucky advanced.

Top-seeded Bea Bielik of Wake Forest advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA women’s tournament, beating UCLA’s Megan Bradley, 6-1, 6-0, at Stanford.

Third-seeded Jessica Lehnhoff of Florida also advanced, beating Pennsylvania’s Alice Pirsu, 6-1, 6-2. Lehnhoff will play seventh-seeded Jewel Peterson of USC in the quarterfinals. Peterson beat UCLA’s Sara Walker, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

After rain forced the World Team championships inside at Duesseldorf, Germany, Britain beat Germany when Lars Burgsmuller had to retire from the doubles match because of pulled muscles in his back.

Russia, last year’s runner-up to Australia, beat Spain, 2-1.

Sixth-seeded Jan-Michael Gambill lost to Olivier Rochus of Belgium, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, in the third round of the Raiffeisen Grand Prix at St. Poelten, Austria.

In other matches, Markus Hipfl of Austria advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over fifth-seeded Stefan Koubek. Seventh-seeded Andrea Gaudenzi was beaten by Jurgen Melzer, 6-3, 7-5, and Flavio Saretta defeated Anthony Dupuis, 6-4, 6-1.

American Chanda Rubin beat second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, 6-3, 7-6 (6), to advance to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open at Spain.

Top-seeded Monica Seles defeated Marta Marrero, 7-5, 6-2, and fifth-seeded Anna Smashnova beat Alicia Molik, 7-5, 6-2.

Miscellany

Underclassmen who participate in an NBA pre-draft camp next month and return to college would lose eligibility for the same number of games they play at the camp.

Fifty-five players with at least one year of college eligibility remaining have declared their intention to make themselves eligible for the June 26 draft.

As long as they do not hire an agent, they will be able to return to college.

Lee Evans, the Wisconsin star who set a Big Ten record last season with 1,545 yards receiving, had surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee.

Evans, who announced in January he would stay at Wisconsin for his senior season, was injured last month while catching a pass in the Badgers’ spring game.

Matt LoVecchio, a backup quarterback last season after leading Notre Dame to the Fiesta Bowl as a freshman, has decided to transfer. LoVecchio, who has two years of eligibility remaining, said he didn’t know where he would end up next season.

Oscar De La Hoya, whose left wrist injury forced postponement of his unification championship bout against Fernando Vargas, said during a news conference in Universal City that his wrist is free of pain four weeks into physical therapy.

“It feels great,” said De La Hoya, whose therapy includes stretching, weight training, push-ups, pull-ups and walking on his hands.

“It doesn’t hurt at all. I’m confident that when we start training, it will be no problem at all.”

After four more weeks of therapy, designed to build strength and flexibility, the World Boxing Council super-welterweight champion is scheduled to begin training in Big Bear shortly after July 4. Originally slated for May 4, De La Hoya’s fight against Vargas has been rescheduled for Sept. 14 in Las Vegas.

Mark Chung and Chris Henderson scored two goals each in the Colorado Rapids’ 5-2 victory over the New England Revolution in a Major League Soccer match in front of 8,002 at Denver.

Georgia’s Summer Sirmons closed with a 30-foot birdie putt for a four-under-par 68 and a share of the second-round lead with Duke’s Virada Nirapathpongporn in the NCAA Division I women’s championship at Auburn, Wash. Arizona leads the team competition with a six-stroke lead over Duke.

Pro Football

The Oakland Raiders signed receiver Matthew Hatchette and offensive lineman Tom Ackerman.

Hatchette had two catches for 44 yards for the New York Jets last season. Ackerman was released in March by New Orleans.

Avengers’ offensive specialist Chris Jackson was activated off the injured list but is questionable for Friday night’s Arena Football League game at Georgia.

Memorial services for former Dodger pitcher Joe Black will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Historic First Church in Phoenix and June 1 at 10 a.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Plainfield, N.J.
