Lakers vs. Kings Courts City Rivalries

Share

Re “Entering the Court of Last Retort,” May 18: I cannot remember the last time I agreed with L.A. Mayor James Hahn in relation to anything he said or did. Today, however, when I read his quote about people in Sacramento and their being jealous of Los Angeles, I had to smile (and agree). Once, many years ago, after reading a scathing, very rude article about Los Angeles in a San Francisco newspaper, I asked my mom why they would write such a thing and, beyond that, why our neighbors to the north would seem to applaud and appreciate such a diatribe.

My mom’s reply of “that old green monster, jealousy, and low self-esteem” would (as Hahn suggests) fit Sacramento dwellers today just as it fit the San Franciscans of a few years ago (and perhaps now). Unfortunately for the Kings fans, they know that no matter which team wins the best-of-seven series, we will still be Los Angeles, Queen of the Angels, and the Lakers will be our team, while Sacramento will still be, well, Sacramento.
