‘Violet Hour’ at SCR

When Richard Greenberg, the most prolific in South Coast Repertory’s stable of acclaimed contemporary playwrights, heard that the theater was building a new stage, he volunteered to write the first play produced there. Hence “The Violet Hour,” which traces a fateful afternoon and early evening in 1919 Manhattan. Fledgling publisher John Pace Seavering has enough capital to put out one book. But he has two on his desk: his best buddy’s novel, and his songstress lover’s memoir. Both authors insist that their fates depend on his decision.

“The Violet Hour,” South Coast Repertory’s Julianne Argyros Stage, 655 Town Center Dr., Costa Mesa. Tuesdays-Fridays, 7:45 p.m. Saturdays-Sundays, 2 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Preview Thursday, Nov. 7, opens Friday. Ends Nov. 24. $19-$54, with a pay-what-you-will show Sunday Nov. 10 at 7:45 p.m. (714) 708-5555.
