Battle of auteurs for film award

Roman Polanski’s “The Pianist” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Talk to Her” were among the nominees announced Thursday for best European film of 2002.

The awards, presented by the European Film Academy, will be handed out Dec. 7 in Rome.

Also nominated as best European film were “8 Women,” directed by Francois Ozon; “Bend It Like Beckham,” directed by Gurinder Chadha; “Bloody Sunday,” directed by Paul Greengrass; “Lilya 4-ever,” directed by Lukas Moodysson; “The Man Without a Past,” directed by Aki Kaurismaki; and “The Magdalene Sisters,” directed by Peter Mullan.
