Pickett’s Big Day Leads Washington

Cody Pickett’s record breaking day assured the Washington Huskies of at least a break-even season -- and some bragging rights.

Pickett threw for 316 yards and four touchdowns and set the Pacific 10 Conference record for single-season passing yardage in Washington’s 42-14 victory over No. 23 Oregon on Saturday.

Pickett increased his total to 3,818 yards to surpass Ryan Leaf, who threw for 3,637 yards for Washington State in 1997.

Pickett also has 305 completions this season to break Steve Stenstrom’s Pac-10 record of 300 for Stanford in 1993.

“I’m proud of him,” Washington Coach Rick Neuheisel said. “But I think he’d trade it all in for an unblemished record.”

Saturday’s win helped the Huskies, 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference, avoid their first losing season since 1976. The Huskies play Washington State next week in the Apple Cup.

The Ducks (7-4, 3-4) were ranked sixth after a 6-0 start, but they’ve lost four of their last five. Oregon hadn’t lost its home finale in its previous nine seasons.
