Kentucky Victory Powered by Bogans

Keith Bogans scored 20 points and No. 15 Kentucky opened its 100th season of basketball with an 82-65 victory over Arizona State on Monday night in the first round of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

The Wildcats (1-0) opened a 20-point lead in the first half and were up 43-30 after shooting 53% from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Kentucky, which shot 51% for the game (29 for 57) advanced to today’s semifinals and will play Virginia, which beat Chaminade, 86-72.

Bogans finished seven of 10 from the field, including three of four on three-point shots.

Jamal Hill had 16 points, all but four in the first half to lead Arizona State (1-1), playing without leading returning scorer Curtis Millage who is sitting out over academic eligibility questions.

No. 4 Alabama 80, Middle Tennessee State 65 -- Erwin Dudley had 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots as the Crimson Tide (3-0) defeated the Blue Raiders (0-2) at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Alabama led by 22 points with 4:20 left before emptying the bench. Mo Williams had 14 points and five assists, while Kenny Walker also scored 14 points.

No. 6 Duke 95, Davidson 80 -- Chris Duhon matched his career high with 20 points and had 10 assists as the Blue Devils (2-0) needed a strong finish at Durham, N.C., to defeat the Wildcats (0-1) for the 16th straight time.

Duke (2-0) defeated Army by 48 points to start the season Saturday, but struggled to put away the defending Southern Conference champions, making 21 turnovers and shooting 40% in the second half.

No. 12 Connecticut 67, George Washington 55 -- Tony Robertson scored 21 points and center Emeka Okafor had 12 rebounds and eight blocks as the Huskies (2-0) held off the Colonials (0-1) at Hartford, Conn.

No. 19 Indiana 84, Massachusetts 71 -- Tom Coverdale scored 20 points and George Leach had career highs of 19 points and 16 rebounds as the Hoosiers (1-0) defeated the Minutemen (0-1) in the opening round of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

No. 20 Gonzaga 71, Utah 52 -- Ronny Turiaf scored a career-high 24 points in 24 minutes and the Bulldogs (2-0) scored 19 straight points in the first half to take control against the Utes (1-1) in the opening round of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii. Gonzaga will next play Indiana.

No. 23 Mississippi State 81, McNeese State 65 -- Timmy Bowers scored 19 points and Winsome Frazier had 14 as the Bulldogs (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss to defeat the Cowboys (1-1) at Starkville, Miss.

New Mexico guard Senque Carey was taken to a hospital after going down hard on the court in the first half of the Lobos’ 60-56 victory over Northwestern State at Albuquerque.

Carey stayed down for about 10 minutes while medical personnel tended to him. He was put in a neck brace and taken out of the arena on a stretcher to University of New Mexico Hospital.

Bob Schenck, an orthopedic doctor at the hospital, said Carey was in serious but stable condition late Monday.
