LeClair Is Injured in Flyers’ Defeat

Pittsburgh goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin had a good view of the league’s top-ranked power-play unit Wednesday night, and even he was shaking his head.

“Our power play,” said Aubin, “has been amazing.”

Mario Lemieux had three of his four assists on the power play and the Penguins converted four of six chances to beat the slumping Philadelphia Flyers, 7-2, at Pittsburgh and tie the Flyers for first place in the Atlantic Division.

To make matters worse for the Flyers, they lost left wing John LeClair because of a dislocated right shoulder.

LeClair, who has 11 goals and 17 points in 21 games, was injured when he collided with Marc Bergevin late in the first period and fell awkwardly.

“If there is ligament damage, then we have something to worry about,” Coach Ken Hitchcock said. “We just have to pray that there is no damage so that we can avoid surgery.”

Aubin stopped 41 shots to earn victories in consecutive games for the first time since March 2001.

Detroit 3, New Jersey 2 -- Kris Draper scored 1:55 into overtime at Detroit, just over a minute after the Devils had a goal by John Madden disallowed because it went in off his skate.

Vancouver 3, Carolina 2 -- The Canucks set a franchise record with their eighth consecutive victory after Daniel Sedin scored the go-ahead goal with 11:15 to play at Raleigh, N.C.

Edmonton 3, Columbus 1 -- Ryan Smyth scored two goals 19 seconds apart in the first period at Columbus, Ohio.

Washington 4, Calgary 2 -- Michael Nylander had a goal and three assists, and Sergei Gonchar scored twice for the Capitals at Washington.

Washington’s Jaromir Jagr (groin) and Peter Bondra (back spasms) sat out the game.

Tampa Bay 1, Buffalo 1 -- Fredrick Modin scored the tying goal 4:37 into the third period to give the Lightning a tie at Buffalo, N.Y.

Ottawa 2, New York Islanders 2 -- Radek Bonk’s power-play goal in the third period helped the Senators extend their unbeaten streak at New York’s Nassau Coliseum to 15 games, dating to 1996.

Nashville 4, San Jose 2 -- Andreas Johansson scored three goals, two on the power play, and had an assist at Nashville to lead the Predators to only their third victory.

Dallas 5, Minnesota 0 -- Mike Modano and Ulf Dahlen scored power-play goals, and the Stars remained unbeaten at home in regulation.

St. Louis 4, Colorado 4 -- Mike Keane scored the tying goal in the third period, and Joe Sakic had a goal and two assists to help the Avalanche earn a tie at Denver.

Todd Simpson of Phoenix and Wade Belak of Toronto were suspended by the league.

Simpson will sit out three games for high sticking Rob DiMaio of Dallas on Monday. He will lose nearly $25,000 in salary because of the suspension.

Belak was suspended for two games and will lose more than $8,500 for elbowing Washington’s Brendan Witt on Tuesday.
